A collaborative, multi-agency effort to address air quality and related health issues in the shared airshed of the Georgia Basin-Puget Sound region, partners contributing to the video include the BC Lung Association, BC Ministry of Environment, Environment Canada, Health Canada, the Greater Vancouver Regional District and the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency.
By providing trusted information that clearly exposes the risks to health created by air pollution, participating health and environment agencies hope to encourage British Columbians to strengthen their commitment to improving air quality.
Air quality planners, medical and healthcare professionals, and local politicians across BC are being provided with copies to help further public discussion and community planning.
“Sadly, we live in a world where it’s no longer always safe to go outside,” said Scott McDonald, Executive Director of the BC Lung Association, “particularly for children, the elderly and those living with existing lung and heart disease. Powerful links between airpollution and illness have been scientifically established and we have an obligation to keep the public informed.”
“The B.C. Government is taking aggressive action to ensure we enjoy the best air quality possible,” said B.C. Environment Minister Penner. “Everyone must take responsibility for protecting our airshed and we're doing our part. All government on-road, heavy-duty diesel fleets will be upgraded with emissions-reducing technology and all future passenger vehicle purchases will be hybrids.”
“The Air Quality Management profession has done an excellent job of developing monitoring systems and scientific research. It has made some progress in translating this understanding into mechanisms to actually improve air quality or slow its deterioration. But now we know that is not good enough," said Johnny Carline, Chief Administrative Officer, Greater Vancouver Regional District.. "Addressing air quality and climate change are mission critical for the region and the planet. This is now an issue for all of us. And we need to get committed or face the consequences.”
“Canadians can breathe easier knowing that Canada’s New Government’s actions will have tangible health and environmental benefits for everyone,” said the Honourable John Baird, Minister of the Environment. “Our Turning the Corner Plan will cut air industrial pollution and greenhouse gases, and we will continue to work with municipalities, provinces, territories and partners like the BC Lung Association to clean up the air we breathe.”
